A sewer line is the primary, large-diameter, underground pipe that transports all wastewater and solid waste from a property's individual drains and fixtures to the municipal sewer system or a septic tank. 

Function and Types
Sewer systems are essential for public health and water quality, carrying sewage to treatment facilities where it is cleaned before being released back into the environment. 
There are three main types of sewer systems:
Sanitary Sewers Solely carry wastewater from homes and businesses to a treatment plant. This is the most common type for residential use.
Storm Sewers Transport rainwater and surface runoff directly to nearby bodies of water without treatment.
Combined Systems Collect both wastewater and stormwater in the same pipes. These are rarely installed in new developments today due to the risk of overflowing untreated sewage during heavy rainfall events.
